Netflix Plans to Stream Many of its Properties for Free

Netflix is planning to expand its viewership and get ahead of its competitors in the race to achieve a monopoly. In order to do so, they have taken a drastic step in streaming their content to the audience without any cost.

Have you seen Stranger Things and Bird Box? If not, then you are lucky because you wouldn’t have to pay a single penny for the aforementioned Netflix content. Apart from them, there will be several other products that will be available for you for absolutely no cost.

Netflix has introduced a “Watch Free” section on its website through which you can access a variety of content without even registering an account and in other words, without paying anything. Other films apart from Bird Box that has been made available for free are Jennifer Aniston (Friends star) and Adam Sandler starrer comedy “Murder Mystery,” “The Boss Baby: Back in Business” from DreamWorks Animation and a biographical drama “The Two Popes” ( an academy award nominee starring Hannibal Lecter star Anthony Hopkins and Jonathan Pryce).

There is a little caveat here. Not the entirety of the show will be available. This plan is just laid out there to hook you in and get introduced to their world. If you wish to get introduced to the world of Netflix, you may do so easily because the pilot episodes of at least six tv series have been made available for free on the Netflix website. If you like the pilot and wish to watch further episodes, you then must have a subscription.

TV series whose pilots have been made available include Winona Ryder starrer “Stranger Things,” “Love is Blind,” “When They See Us,” “Our Planet,” “Grace and Frankie,” and “Elite.”

It is also expected that Netflix would rotate the free content so that non-subscribers can get a grasp of how much variety Netflix possesses though the timetable of it has not been mentioned yet.

One more thing to keep in mind is that the free content will not be available on connected-tv platforms and iOS browsers. It will only be available via PC/ Laptop web browsers or on Android supported mobile phones.

Netflix has enjoyed a lot of success since March. Since the lockdown was imposed, many citizens had no option but to stay at home and entertain themselves in some way. Netflix viewership did rise up because of that, but now Netflix fears that the momentum they had gained over the past few months may evanesce once the government eases out restrictions (which they are doing right now).

The “Watch free” strategy is to maintain the organic traffic numbers which Netflix has enjoyed over the past few months.

Several months earlier, Netflix also had made 10 of its educational documentaries free to watch on Youtube.

Netflix does provide some high-quality content which is also getting mainstream recognition as The Irishman bagged an Academy Award nomination for the best picture last year. Shows like Dark, Stranger Things, Ozark, Daredevil, The Haunting of Hill House are crowd pullers, and making them accessible for less cost or even making them free for a short amount of time is not a foolish strategy.

However, Netflix should pay attention to its competitors who are not sitting idly and are rummaging for strategies to counter its perennial dominance. It is worth pointing out that Apple and Warner Media have also made some of their content free to watch to increase the number of their subscriptions.
