Ring, a home security business owned by Amazon, has just announced a new device for its customers: a flying drone with a camera on it. The drone works with your house’s Ring Alarm System and can help you monitor the activities that are going inside your house when you are not at home.
The drone flies around inside of your house and captures footage of different areas or rooms of your home and then finally returns to its dock for recharging its battery. However, it’s worth mentioning that the device only records footage when it’s not in the dock for charging because its dock blocks the camera’s view due to which it is unable to capture any footage while charging. The device follows a preset path and captures footage of different areas and spots of your home. But you can also set up or change the drone’s flying path by installing an app on your mobile.
Besides this, if it detects any motion or suspicious activity in any area of your home, it will automatically fly to that area and capture that footage of that area. Amazing, right? Additionally, the drone features an HD camera, obstacle avoidance technology, and shrouded propellers that make sure that the drone does not damage your other stuff inside of your house while flying.
The drone comes with a price tag of $249 and will be available for purchase in 2021(once the company receives authorization for selling this device).
If we take a look at the new Ring Always Home Cam, it appears to be a great invention that can help us a lot in keeping our home safe while we are not there or are out of town. However, it has undoubtedly raised the eyebrows of privacy advocates. Besides, the company (Ring) has also received lots of criticism in the past thanks to its existing security product and its connection with police departments, which allow them to access all the footage captured by their cameras.
Our view
Ring Always Home Cam is a phenomenal and innovative invention by Ring that can help you in keeping your home safe while you are not there or are out of town. But keeping in mind the amount of criticism that the company got in the past thanks to its invasive surveillance system and its connection with the police departments, we do feel that the device may be unable to gain acceptance from the general public and privacy advocates.
Why? Because they may think that this device may affect their and their family’s privacy. Overall, it is a phenomenal device, but only time will tell whether it gets acceptance from people or not as well as authorization from FCC.
