Sandman Will Start Shooting In October

Recently, Netflix announced the upcoming TV show The Sandman will start shooting in October. It is a comic book series published by DC Comics and written by Neil Gaiman. It stars Mike Dringenberg, Sam Kieth, Shawn McManus, Jill Thompson, Marc Hempel, and Michael Zulli. The story tells about Dream of the Endless, rules over the world of dreams. The main character of the series is Morpheus and another name, one of the seven Endless. The other Endless are Death, Destiny, Despair, Destruction, and Delirium. The comic series is famous for Gaiman’s trademark and the use of anthropomorphic personification of different metaphysical entities. While blending history and mythology is the horror setting of the DC Universe.

The series is critically acclaimed for the most amazing graphic novels ever, and it is also the New York Times Best Seller list along with Watchmen, The Dark Knight, and Maus. The Sandman was also featured as one of the five graphic novels to make it in Entertainment Weekly’s 100 best reads from 1983 to 2008 and ranked at number 46. Norman Mailer said that the comic is an intellectual comic strip. Gaiman was co-creating the series and revealed that the shooting of the Comic-Con@Home panel has started, but the team has to halt the production work due to the on-going coronavirus pandemic. He also shared that the team is planning to start shooting in the fall, and the goal is looking solid for now.

Neil Richard MacKinnon Gaiman is an English author of novels, comic books, short fiction, nonfiction, graphic novels, audio theatre, and films. He is known for his novels including Stardust, Coraline, American Gods, Graveyard Book, and comic books, like The Sandman. Gaiman won many awards including Nebula, Hugo, and Bram Stoker awards. He received the Carnegie and Newbery Medals for the book, The Graveyard Book in 2008.

Gaiman always has a keen interest to read the work of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Lewis Carroll, Rudyard Kipling, Alan Moore, Steve Ditko, G.K. Chesterton, and many more. He is a lifetime fan of the Monty Python comedy troupe, and as a teenager, he owned a book of Monty Python’s Big Red Book. At the age of 19-20 years, he contacted his favorite science fiction writer, R.A. Lafferty, and asked for some advice on becoming an author. The writer wrote back to Gaiman with an encouraging letter along with some literary advice.

Gaiman shared that Roger Zelazny was the author who influenced him the most, with the topics he writes about and his literary style. He was also a great fan of Samuel R. Delany, Moorcock, Ellison, Angela Carter, Le Guin, and Lafferty. Recently, in a tweet, Gaiman confirmed that shooting for The Sandman will start in three weeks, and the production will start in October. He posted a picture of the script of the first episode, and the caption reads: It is beginning to feel real. We start shooting in 3 weeks, lockdowns permitting. #SandmanonNetflix

The series was given an audible drama that told stories from the twenty issues of the series, with the title voice role James McAvoy along with another star cast. Gaiman said that the audio adaptation is a faithful iteration of the story and is very contrasting and different from other previous attempts at live-action Sandman adaptations.

Although directors and writers are more attached to the previous attempts of adaptations, they failed to honor the original material. Hence the upcoming Gaiman’s style of adaptations sounds like the right way. Now that the production is moving forward and fans will soon witness the series, and only then we will know how the new version of the adaptation is accepted. I hope the article was informative.
