How often do you see anime characters breaking the fourth wall? Gintama has done it many times, and the dubbed version of Ghost Stories rips apart the fourth wall with constant inside jokes about the anime, manga, and how they are forced to do stupid things in the anime.
But new manga/anime series are reluctant to go to such extents to break the fourth wall. However, things are going well for Jujutsu Kaisen as the new Chapter 129.1 makes fun of the series itself.
In the weekly releases of new chapters in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump, Jujutsu Kaisen rolled out a new update on the bonus chapter about a break from the weekly story. In the new chapter, we can see the characters are aware of themselves and decide to play along with the chapter with gimmicks and party games.
Satoru Gojo, Yuji Itadori, Nobara Kugisaki, and Megumi Fushiguro talk about the Mangaka missing the weekly manga’s deadline. Instead of following the original story, they are bound to find a way to fill in the bonus episode with some activity. The characters talk about showing off their casual clothes, changing screen tones, and breaking the fourth wall to fill in some sort of entertainment in this free chapter.
As a teacher of Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical College, Gojo suggests a few recreational activities with a spin board game and Itadori dart hits on the beach episode. After a general discussion of how to use this episode, the characters conclude to sing a few songs to pass the time.
The whole chapter talks about random stuff, and as a bonus chapter, it doesn’t provide any value to the story. But it’s not new that a manga uses its characters to break the fourth wall to consciously talk about certain things.
Moreover, manga like Daily Life of Highschool Boys and Pop Team epic are famous for breaking the fourth wall in the same story without any bonus chapters.
But as a new shonen anime, it is very rare for Jujutsu Kaisen to break the fourth wall. Gege Akutami might be confident in his work, and as a matter of fact, Jujutsu Kaisen already made it the top anime shows of winter 2020.
Towards the end of the special episode, Itadori asks Gojo sensei why he is not participating in the singing gig. Gojo reminds readers that his stats and skills are overpowered from the start, and there is not a single thing he can’t do, including singing and fighting.
In the bonus chapter finale, Gojo takes over the singing part, and first-year students celebrate the anime adaptation. And at the same time, Sakuna gets bored and lies on the ground listening to their conversion while waiting for the original chapters to debut next week.
