Quentin Tarantino Will Novelize His Movie “Once Upon A Time In Hollywood”

Filmmaker Quentin Tarantino recently announced that he would write a novel based on his Oscar-nominated script, Once Upon A Time In Hollywood. Previously, Tarantino has adapted his film Inglorious Bastards into a book that provides an alternative story. So readers can expect that according to Tarantino’s classic fashion, the story in the novel will be different from the movie Once Upon A Time In Hollywood.

Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time In Hollywood is a comedy-drama starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Margot Robbie, and Brad Pitt. Heyday Films, Bona Film Group, Visiona Romantica, and Columbia Pictures served as producer of the film. The movie is set in 1969 Los Angeles and follows an actor struggling to cope with the fast-changing film industry and his stunt double. The film is loosely based on the murder of the famous actress Tate-LaBianca.

Once Upon A Time In Hollywood premiered on 21 May 2019 at the Cannes Film Festival, and it was then theatrically released on 26 July 2019 in the United States. The film collected $374.3 million against a budget of $90-96 million. The film industry and audience consider the movie as Tarantino’s love letter to Hollywood. It received appreciation from critics for its soundtrack, acting, direction, screenplay, production, cinematography, and costume design. It got ten nominations at the 92nd Academy Awards and won two of them for Best Production Design and Best Supporting Actor (Pitt). It also won Golden Globe Awards for Best Motion Picture- Musical or Comedy.

The film starts in 1969 and follows a fading Hollywood actor Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio), star of the 50s TV series Bounty Law. Dalton has a best friend and stunt double, Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt), who lives in a trailer with his pit bull. Booth also struggles to find stunt work because of the rumors that he murdered his wife. On the other hand, leading actress Sharon Tate has moved next door to Dalton with her director husband, Roman Polanski. Dalton dreams of befriending them to revive his acting career.

The film feels like a perfect contemporary fairy tale where different characters blend amazingly to provide an in-depth vision of Tarantino’s 60s Hollywood. In an interview, Tarantino shared that he tried to recreate Hollywood and the streets as it used to be in his childhood. The director attempted to dive into his memory when he used to sit in the car beside his dad and watched the big banners of films passing by. He captured a similar shot in the movie with Brad Pitt in the car with the background’s 60’s songs.

Recently, Screencrush reported that Tarantino would adapt his Oscar-nominated screenplay Once Upon A Time In Hollywood into a novel. He will expand Rick and Cliff’s stories and add a few more sequences not included in the film due to a three-hour time limit. Tarantino wanted to novelize the movies for a long time, especially the novels released in his youth. His publisher, HarperCollins, also announced that Tarantino would be writing the nonfiction book titled Cinema Speculation, which will explore his love for the movies of the 1970s. Tarantino grew up reading 70s movie novelizations. And he had a tremendous affection for the genre. He was proud to announce the movie novelization of his movie Once Upon A Time In Hollywood. He was also thrilled to explore the characters and their pre-existing worlds.

The fantastic director wanted to expand the critically acclaimed film into a book as he did not get enough time to demonstrate his whole idea about the movie. The film was one of the most appreciated projects in 2019, but the casual audience felt it was too long with three hours. For fans who loved the concept, film, and Tarantino’s work, the book will give them some in-depth look at the on-screen story through a book whose length is not restricted. If this writing venture received positive remarks, fans could see more writing pieces from their beloved filmmaker.

Quentin Tarantino has always searched for inspiration that influenced his films. Hopefully, the filmmaker will explore his thinking as a storyteller through his writing. Once Upon A Time In Hollywood is one of Tarantino’s films that has inspired the film industry, and his novel will undoubtedly inspire aspiring filmmakers and creative fans.
