Warner Brothers and actor Johnny Depp himself confirms that he is exiting from the character of Gellert Grindelwald in the upcoming movie Fantastic Beasts 3. The production studio is now seeking a replacement for the role. Due to this, the project has been delayed until 2022.
The American actor Johnny Depp is one of the A-listed film stars in the industry right now. He made his debut with the popular cult movie, A Nightmare on Elm Street. Depp has been nominated for three Academy Awards for Best Actor and ten Golden Globe Awards.
The actor is known for his role as Jack Sparrow in the swashbuckler film series Pirates of the Caribbean. He has gained critical praise for his portrayals as Joseph D. Pistone in Donnie Brasco. Apart from this, Depp has featured in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Alice in Wonderland, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Public Enemies, Corpse Bride, etc. He was listed as the highest-paid actor in Guinness World Record in 2012 with $75 US million dollars.
However, Depp and controversies go hand in hand. In 1989 he was arrested in Vancouver for assaulting a security guard. Depp was arrested in 1994 for damaging his hotel room at The Mark Hotel in New York City. And in May 2016, the controversial Amber Heard filed a divorce against Depp. Heard also filed a complaint about domestic violence that alleged “verbal, physical and emotional abuse.”
In between all these controversies, the author of Harry Potter, J.K. Rowling, defended the actor by saying, “Based on the understanding of the circumstances, she and the directors are rather happy to have Johnny play the significant characters in the films.”
Rowling’s statement had attracted controversies towards it. The Sun strongly criticized Rowling’s affirmation in an article with the headline “GONE POTTY: How can JK Rowling be ‘happy’ casting the wife-beater, Johnny Depp?”
Later, Depp pushed back against the Heard’s allegations of violence and shared evidence that Depp was instead the one who was being abused in the marriage. He also filed a report against The Sun’s article, in which the writer referred to him as a “wife-beater.” He claimed the article had caused severe harm to his professional and personal reputation.
In November 2020, the 12 alleged assaults had been substantially correct; hence the case decided in The Sun’s favor. And a few days later, Warner Bros. asked Depp to resign from Gellert Grindelwald’s character and the Fantastic Beast franchise.
Warner Bros. offered no more details regarding Depp’s resignation. They shared that Johnny Depp will quit the franchise of Fantastic Beasts. And they thanked him for working with them.
Many controversies already surround the franchise due to Rowling’s anti-trans statement, and now it is avoiding any more negative publicity. Depp was never the first choice for the role of Fantastic Beast. The 2018 sequel of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald was also a financial disappointment for Warner Bros.
The production of Fantastic Beasts 3 was planned to start in March 2020, but it got postponed due to the pandemic coronavirus. The film’s shooting began in September, and again the film has to face the second national lockdown on 5 November 2020.
The release date of the film is pushed back from November 2021 to the summer of 2022. Extending the deadline, the studio is might trying to shed some problems that cause the financial loss of the previous Fantastic Beasts franchise.
